Do I Really Need a Personal Brand? Why 1 Real Relationship Beats 10,000 Followers
Do I Really Need a Personal Brand? Why 1 Real Relationship Beats 10,000 Followers
If you’re looking for someone to help you “put out more content,” then I’m not your girl.
If your goal is just to:
“build a presence”
“post consistently”
“go viral”
…then you should probably find another creator’s “hacks” to follow.
I’ve done my time in social media. I’ve built businesses. I’ve created for large-scale productions. I’ve run programs and taught entrepreneurs at all levels.
And the most impactful lesson I learned while building audiences was this:
Your audience size does NOT matter if there is no real relationship between you and them.
That, by the way, is the heart of an effective personal brand.
Your Personal Brand Isn’t About Posting More, It’s About Relating More
Everyone wants to know, “Do I need a personal brand?”
If you are a coach, consultant, course creator, real estate agent, online entrepreneur, service provider, or speaker, the answer is yes—but not for the reason you think.
A personal brand is not just:
Pretty graphics
A perfectly curated grid
A content calendar you never stick to
A powerful personal brand is about responsibility for your side of the relationship.
Most people put all the pressure on the audience:
“The algorithm hates me.”
“My ideal client isn’t seeing my posts.”
“No one is engaging.”
But here’s the reframe:
What if your content is not actually a conversation with a real person, but just a bunch of posts you’re throwing at the wall hoping something sticks?
Before You Build a Personal Brand, Answer These Questions
STOP putting it all on them.
Ask yourself:
Who are you talking to when you create content?
How do they spend their day? What thoughts are they thinking? How do they feel?
What are they into outside of their work when they’re not staring at their phone screen?
And then this one:
What would you be posting about if you weren’t posting because you expect some sort of return?
This is where authentic personal branding for professionals actually begins—not with a strategy doc, but with genuine curiosity about your person.
Are you treating your content as a channel of actual communication between you and your person?
Or are you treating your content like a broken slot machine, hoping that if you put in a token, you might get something out of it?
People Don’t Just Read Your Posts, They Read Your Vibes
Whether you’re “woo woo” or not, it’s undeniable that humans are natural readers of vibes.
When the vibes are real—read: genuine, trustworthy, grounded—content resonates.
When the vibes are off—read: fake, untrustworthy, disconnected—content flops.
That’s why personal branding for coaches, consultants, real estate agents, and online entrepreneurs is less about tricks and more about:
Being honest about what you care about
Speaking to someone you actually like
Showing up with grounded energy, not desperation
Your potential clients can feel the difference.
The Simplest Way to Make Your Personal Brand More Magnetic
My best advice for you right now is this:
Pick one person to talk to in your content.
Someone you know. Someone you feel really comfortable communicating with.
Then:
Write to them.
Record video talking to them.
Record audio with them on your mind.
Then watch.
The vibes of your content will transform in a way I can’t explain with just one post.
And the relationship between you and your person (yes—notice I’m not saying followers) will start to transform.
This is the foundation of a personal brand that actually works: one real person, one real relationship, one real conversation.
Why Obsessing Over Followers Is Killing Your Personal Brand
The obsession with amassing heaps of followers is misguided effort at best.
And the upset you might feel because “NO ONE” is following you is actually wasted energy.
If you have even ONE person following your work:
Write to them.
Create for them.
Build a relationship with THEM.
And more will come.
The message you have for one specific person that you actually care about will travel so much further than the message you have for a mass of faceless “followers” who you feel you don’t know and who don’t know you.
That’s what a real personal brand is: not a performance for the crowd, but a clear, honest signal sent to your person.
